Guest Blogger Jennifer, Part 3: Starting Over/Non-Traditional Paths

It can be incredibly daunting to abandon your current career and all the work you invested in getting there, only to have to start from scratch. But Sharon and I have both lived through this one, so believe me, it can be done! Even with all the hassles and frustrations of going back to undergrad and the intensity of 4 years of vet school, I would much rather go through all of that and emerge on the other end as a vet than spend my entire life wondering what could have been. If being a vet is really what you want, it will all be worth it in the end.

You may also worry that you’ll be the only older or non-traditional student in your class. I am happy to say that this is definitely not true!! Many incoming first-years ARE in their early 20s and just coming from undergrad, but plenty of them aren’t. I was worried that I’d be totally out of place as a married woman in my late-20s, but I have briefly gotten to know several classmates through Facebook who are also in their late-20s and are either married or in long-term relationships. Whatever your situation, chances are good that there will be someone else in your class who can relate.

  1. LOL. You sound fine. Try thinking about going to vet school at like 51, like me. I wonder if they will even accept me.
